"Sonda" - The Debut Album ★★★★★

"I’m not sure if An Buailteoir Aerach refers to a hurler or a beater, but either way it’s a belter of a reel to open this debut album. Catalina is a much gentler track, the flute intro layered with pipes and saxophone on Maurice Lennon’s Waltz. Richard also provides drums, with accordion from Stephen Doherty and fiddle from Fiachra Hayes. More reels, including Finbarr Dwyer’s Hollybush and the great old Cameronian, really show off the pipes in a flowing yet rhythmic performance, a touch of wildness combined with some tight closed fingering and staccato triplets."

“virtuoso.. in the bygone style of fairground pipers”

- Alex Monaghan -

"The pace and control are exciting.. exhilarating.."

Richard grew up in a musical family in Galway city before moving to Loughrea - an area which has produced some fine musicians over the years. The likes of Patsy Touhey, Vincent Broderick and Paddy Carty have made the area well known for producing pipers and flute players of the highest calibre. The music of the local area had a profound impression upon Richard and it can be heard in his playing today.

Richard is a winner of numerous All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil titles in all age groups, on uilleann pipes, flute and saxophone. He has held the Senior title on the uilleann pipes both fast and slow airs and the flute slow airs.

"I have a particular grá for the slow airs in the Irish tradition. Not just because they suit the pipes so well, but I have fond memories of sitting down with my father to listen to the airs being sung, many of them in the sean-nós style. We would often make the journey back to Connemara for lessons and to listen to the way the music and song was interpreted out there. It has had a lasting effect on me"

Richard has performed all over the world with music groups and stage shows. He has travelled extensively with shows such as Celtic Crossroads, Titanic Dance, Irish Celtic and Mise Éire. Richard has performed with bands such as FullSet, Freewheel and ALDOC.

Richard's debut solo album "Sonda" was recorded in his own recording studio - "Dúléim Studios" in Moycullen, Co. Galway. It was released in 2017 and has been described by critics as "musically riveting".
